CHECKLIST FOR HIRING THE RIGHT COACH

The quality of the relationship between the coach and coachee is the foundation for effective coaching. Coaches come from all kinds of backgrounds and have different approaches to the process. Here are some questions to help you hire the right coach for yourself or someone you are leading.

  1. Does the coach have adequate experience in working with executives on this level?
  2. Does this coach appear to have the ability to develop a strong, trusting relationship with the executive?
  3. Does the person have a style that is compatible with the executive’s style?
  4. Does this coach have the skills and business background required to meet the coaching objectives?
  5. Is the coach someone the executive can respect?
  6. Does the coach appear to be a team player and can he or she be flexible?
  7. Does the coach appear to fit with the culture of the organization?
  8. Is the coach a person of integrity and does he or she appear to be one who can deliver the truth to the organization and the coachee?
  9. Does this person appear to be one who has great insight into people and situations?
  10. Does the coach have an executive presence?
